Antigua has always been a popular tourist destination, offering visitors miles of white sand beaches, warm weather, and local culture that is second to none. Having only being granted independence from the United Kingdom in 1981, English is still spoken everywhere on the island, whilst the seafood and tropical fruits that are served in the hotels and restaurants are purely Caribbean. Antigua is home to the fascinating Nelson's Dockyard which looks like it could have been transplanted from any port town in the UK, whilst the many beaches provide visitors with the opportunity to participate in water- and beach-sports. The nearby islands of Montserrat and Saint Kitts and Nevis are reachable by light aircraft.
Antigua is serviced by the VC Bird International Airport, approximately eight kilometres to the north-east of the capital and largest city of Antigua and Barbuda, Saint John's. Several British airlines visit the airport (a reflection of the large numbers of tourists that still visit the English-speaking island), including British Airways, BMI, First Choice Airways, Virgin Atlantic and XL Airways. Car hire is recommended for visiting the island, with car rental companies Hertz, Dollar, Thrifty, Avis and National all present at the airport. There are two main roads that lead into Saint John's from the direction of the airport, Old Parham Road and Factory Road. The English Harbour and Falmouth Harbour can be reached from Saint John's by taking All Saints Road through the village of the same name, and then simply following the signs.
